Kami ay dumating. Kami miabot na. We have arrived.

Arrivants is an art & exploration project by Ottawa-based, Filipina-Canadian artist Kristina Corre. What began as explorations into my own immigrant Filipina-Canadian experience is now growing into an art exhibition that will tell the stories of larger Filipinx* communities throughout Canada’s national capital region.**

I first came across the term “arrivants” at a talk given by photo-based artist Jin-me Yoon about her experience as a Korean-born Canadian, and the identity she formed after arriving on this land. In my project, to arrive is to declare one’s identity, to take into account what one has brought with them, and to consider the possible futures.

I am now looking for subjects to interview and photograph for this next phase of the project. Please read through the site for a better idea of the project, and get in touch if you have any questions or would like to get involved!

*Filipinx is used as an inclusive term in this project, to refer to Filipinas, Filipinos, and the entire gender spectrum in between.

** This project recognizes the Algonquin peoples as the traditional custodians of the land on which we have arrived, and acknowledges the First Peoples on whose traditional, unceded territory we gather and create.  As arrivants, we show recognition of and respect for the host nation, the Omàmiwininìwag (Algonquin peoples,in the Algonquin language).

The Arrivants Project gratefully acknowledges the financial support from the City of Ottawa’s Arts & Cultural Funding Program
